Coronavirus Update 18/03/2020

Cycling UK’s advice has been updated in the light of latest government guidance and it “has taken the decision to ask all its member and affiliate groups not to run any group activities, including club runs or events.

All Wednesday Wheelers’ rides are therefore cancelled until further notice.

Cycling UK add, however “people should not avoid cycling altogether as it remains a great way to keep fit and active and is a good way to boost immunity”.

Hagg Bridge closure

Hagg Bridge (SE717452), which is the B1228’s crossing of Pocklington Canal between Sutton on Derwent and Melbourne, is set to be closed from 23rd March for approximately 6 months.  At the time of writing, different accounts conflict over whether or not access on foot across the bridge will be maintained, and I have seen no specific statement on whether any pedestrian access will be 24 hours, or for limited periods. Please email blog@wwyork.org if you can clarify what access is being allowed.

Tandem WoW have crossed America

From Andrew Richardson:

Many of you will be aware of the two ladies who are attempting to set a record for cycling around the world on a tandem. They were our guests at the CTC North Yorkshire Awards dinner last year, before setting off.

They have just completed crossing America (with only one rest day!) and a link to their latest blog post is https://www.tandemwow.com/blog/america

They should finish in March and are planning a party in Oxford if anybody wishes to join them.

A request to publicise this was received by email:

Further details and link to the website where you can register….

Drumlanrig Cycle Challenge 2020 – Tearfund

Just a wee reminder that entry is via a donation, and all the money raised will go to the work of Tearfund in releasing people from extreme poverty.

We would appreciate if you could publicise the event with your club members – on the assumption that there isn’t a clash with any other club activities you have on that day.

Best Regards

John Hunter (on behalf of Tearfund)

CTC North Yorkshire Annual Lunch, 8th February

The following from Andrew Richardson:

You are invited to attend CTC North Yorkshire’s Annual Lunch and Awards Presentation on Saturday 8th February 2020. As requested by some of you, we have a new venue this year.  The event is at the Novotel, Fishergate, York, YO10 4FD. Complimentary car parking will be available.
The menu is attached and consists of a two-course lunch, of main course and dessert, followed by tea or coffee, and the chef’s Petit Fours. The cost of your first drink will be paid by the club. Please collect a voucher before going to the bar.
We hope to have a guest speaker and a quiz to keep you entertained, as well as a raffle.
This is always a great social get together, but the main purpose is to distribute the awards. Our standard rides and Audax rides have had over 200 different riders taking part in 2019, and 16 riders completed 3 or more events to qualify for the awards scheme. First time qualifiers receive an engraved CTC North Yorkshire medallion. Previous year qualifiers receive a Year Bar to hang below the medallion.
All qualifiers will be presented with their award and a certificate for their rides. If you cannot attend, your medallion/Year Bar will be posted to you. If you have only completed one or two rides, then a certificate will be presented if you attend the lunch.
A list of the rides completed for each rider is now on the website (www.ctcnorthyorkshire.org.uk). Please let me know by email (andrich@hotmail.co.uk) as soon as possible if there are any discrepancies.
The cost of the lunch is £20 per person. Please send your order using the slip below to me at the address above with your payment (payable to A Richardson), no later than Wednesday 22 January, as we have to send final numbers and payment to the hotel. Members of York Wednesday Wheelers are welcome to give orders to me on rides.
On behalf of the committee, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and great riding in 2020. The calendar of rides (and other events) will soon be on the website and paper copies will be available at the lunch. We look forward to seeing you at the lunch.
Best wishes
Andrew Richardson

Christmas Lunch: Urgent message from Keith Benton

From: Keith <keith@dkbenton.uk>
26 Nov at 16:27

Hello everyone

I have a problem with the lunch

The sales manager at Burn Hall is not willing to change the set menus and Traditional roast beef (with a £3.00 supplement) and Salmon can only be chosen from the £25.00 menu.

It seems that patronage for the last 10 years counts for nothing!

We can have the original menu at £21.00 (WW is standing the £1.00 over the £20.00 you have all paid ) or we can have a £25.00 menu. I show below the comparison

So for the trad Soup or (Prawn Cocktail) , Turkey, and  Pudding menu choices (over 80% of you have chosen this) we get nothing more than is offered  on the £21.00  menu  ie paying an extra £4.00 for nothing

My inclination is to go for the £21.00 menu but I would like you all to consider and for those who chose beef or salmon to decide whether the extra is worth it. For the other variations would you please let me know which option you wish to take

I think that we would all have to go with one menu ie we can’t have some on £21.00 and others on £25.00

I am sorry for this hassle. For the first time for 12 years I have not enjoyed the organisation of the lunch. When you stop enjoying something  it is time to give up and I would like another WW to take over for next year

Menu at £21.00                                                          Menu at £25.00

Starter                                                                         Starter
Huby winter broth                                                   Home made leek & potato soup
Chicken liver pate                                                    Deep fried Brie
Prawn Cocktail                                                          Prawn Cocktail

Main                                                                            Main
Trad Turkey                                                               Trad Turkey
Braised shin of beef                                                  Braised shin of beef                                                                                                                                  (roast beef £3.00 supp)
Oven baked cod fillet wrapped in pancetta         Baked salmon
Roast vegetable wellington                                      Mushroom, sorrel risotto

Desserts                                                                        Desserts
Christmas pudding                                                     Christmas pudding
Baked cheesecake                                                       Creme Brulee
Trio of local ice cream                                               Eaton Mess

Tea or coffee and a mince pie                                  Tea and coffee

I’ve coloured the £21.00 menu in Green the £25.00 in red in case your device doesn’t print out in the layout I have used

regards

Keith

Shorter Wednesday Wheelers’ Rides

Following the proposal discussed at the recent AGM, over coming weeks there will be a trial of an additional, shorter Wednesday ride.  Departure will be at 9.30 from Exhibition Square, as normal.  Rides will be about 40 miles and have a coffee break (where possible) and a lunch break: Wednesday Wheelers shorter rides.
